What is your calling from God? Do you know? Have you ever thought about it? Every Christian has a personal calling from God, yet so many go through this life without ever knowing what that calling is. Your calling may not be what you do on a daily basis in order to earn a living, but then again, it might. My calling does not happen to be related to what I do to earn a living. My job is as a pharmacist, while my calling is teaching, specifically teaching the Bible.

There are several people on this earth whom I admire because they have been faithful to their calling. One of those is my uncle, Jack Parker. Anyone who knows Jack recognizes that his calling is working with young people. Uncle Jack was a teacher for many years. I was privileged to be part of his sixth grade class and it was obvious, even to a sixth grader, that he loved teaching young people. He made learning fun and always had a word of encouragement for his students. After retirement from teaching he continues to work with the youth of our county in many ways. Actually retirement is not even a word in Jack’s vocabulary. He has worked harder since leaving teaching than most people do in their primary jobs.

Last weekend I sat and watched as he taught my young nephews their weekly guitar lesson. The boys love their time with him because he pushes them, yet makes learning lots of fun. My uncle is eighty years old and for all his adult life, he has been faithful to his calling.

Jesus had a calling on his life. Let’s listen to Jesus telling the people about his calling in John 6: 38, “For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me.” Jesus establishes that he came to earth because it was what the Father desired. He would tread the sands of earth in order to accomplish His Father’s will and fulfill his own calling. What was His Father’s will? John 6: 40 provides the answer. “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.”

The Father’s will was for Jesus to provide eternal life through his sacrificial death on the cross. Jesus would be that final lamb slain upon the altar that would forever cover the sin of every person that would ever live. I’m so thankful that Jesus was faithful to His calling, aren’t you!!

What is your calling? Are you being faithful to it? Perhaps the salvation of another person depends on your faithfulness to your calling. Perhaps your calling will be or is a blessing to others. Be faithful to what God has called you to in this life. It is the pathway to joy and contentment!!
