Today’s Topic: Heroes
There are many people I could have spent a few minutes telling you about as we undertake to write on the topic of HEROES. I pondered for a while on this, but finally settled on telling you about the hero that I have had the pleasure of seeing in action for the past 20+ years. That hero is my husband, Greg.
Greg is a big man with a big heart, and an even bigger character. When we married in 1995, Greg had a 2 1/2 year old son named Charlie. Charlie lived with his mom, and her parents in Alabama. Every other weekend…..EVERY.OTHER.WEEKEND, people….Greg left from work on Friday afternoon, drove 4 hours to Birmingham, Alabama to see Charlie. He would spend the night on Friday night, visit with Charlie all day on Saturday, then return home either Saturday night, or early Sunday morning. These every other weekend visits continued for 16 years, until Charlie left for college.
There were a whole host of things that Greg could have done on those weekends, and perhaps would rather have done. Greg, however, is a man of character and commitment. He wanted to be in Charlie’s life as much as possible in those years. Today, Charlie is fully cognizant of the sacrifices his dad made for him. He and Greg have a wonderful, close, loving relationship, and his longs to be a man of character and integrity, just like his dad.
In recent years, Greg has opened his heart up to Bree, our Australian daughter-from-another-family. Bree and Greg have a really neat relationship. They love to tease each other, but they also have some really serious discussions about life and faith. Greg is a guiding influence in Bree’s life, and it has been a beautiful thing to watch.
I have learned so much from my husband, and I am a better woman because I am married to him. Sure, he has his faults. We all do. But, he is a man of love, honesty, character, and integrity. That is why Greg is my HERO!
