In the past couple of months, I have hosted two virtual homemade biscuit making events where I invited women into my kitchen through the marvel of Zoom video conferencing. As they worked in their kitchens, I taught them how to make homemade southern buttermilk biscuits from my kitchen. In the first session in July, about 25 women gathered with me, while the session this past weekend was more intimate, with two ladies in it.

Here are a few pictures from the events:

This past weekend’s event prompted me to seek out a blog post from Compassion International®  that was all about kitchens around the world. The pictures in the post were from kitchens of homes where children who are part of the Compassion Child Sponsorship program live. Go HERE to read the post and see the pictures.

While kitchens around the world look very different, the one constant is that the women who inhabit them have a desire to show hospitality to those who visit, AND their Mama hearts want to feed their families well.

When I was in Peru in 2019 we visited several homes and saw the kitchens in each one. Usually the home had a dirt floor, block walls, and a piece of tin laid over the top of the blocks to form a roof. Often there was no electricity or running water, and many looked very much like the kitchens in the post to which I linked above.

Each mama in those kitchens longed for the means to feed her children. The mamas whose children were part of the Compassion Child Sponsorship Program in a local, evangelical church in their community knew their children were getting nutritious food several times a week, while the mamas whose children were not yet part of the Compassion program longed for their children to get word that they now have a sponsor.

Sponsorship makes a world of difference in the life of a child and a family. A sponsored child will attend their local child development center several times a week and will have access to nutritious food, education about nutrition, health, hygiene, and other crucial lessons. They will also have access to medical care, and be taught about the Jesus who loves them very much. Children who are sponsored have a hope and a future. Here are a few pictures from my trip to Peru.

Friend, I have seen first-hand what a blessing sponsorship is to children and families living in poverty. Because I believe in the work of Compassion, I sponsor three girls: two in Tanzania and one in Columbia, and have been a sponsor for 11 years. For only $38 a month each, my sponsored girls have access to life-changing care and teaching. I correspond with them on a regular basis and send them pictures of my family and me. I tell them I love them and that they are important to me, and I encourage them to work hard in school and learn about Jesus.

My Compassion girls send me letters and pictures they have drawn and Bible verses they are learning. I receive yearly updates from the pastors at the churches where they attend the Compassion program, as well as progress reports from their schooling. My girls and I have a relationship.

I cannot change the entire world, but for the children I sponsor, I can change their world. So can you, dear one. Would you consider sponsoring a child through Compassion?

If so, here are a couple of ways you can do that.

  1. Text BISCUIT to 83393.
  2. Go HERE to search for a child who is waiting for a sponsor like YOU.

I have a gift for everyone who says ‘YES’ to sponsoring a child. It is a copy of my new Bible study, James: Recipe for a Living Faith. If you will email me a copy of your sponsorship confirmation and your mailing address, I will send your copy of the James Bible study right away as a THANK YOU for rescuing a child from poverty.

What questions do you have about sponsorship? Drop them in the comments or send me an email to [email protected]. I will be happy to answer them for you. Thank you for changing the life of a child in poverty.
