Twelve years ago this coming December my Daddy was diagnosed with metastatic colon cancer. I felt as if an earthquake had shaken me to my very core. I cried, I tried to control, and I questioned. Those twenty-two months before Daddy graduated to heaven were days of incredible testing of my then-small faith. Because of those days, I immersed myself in the Scriptures, and pressed into Jesus. Through it all, I learned that God is faithful, and that Jesus never leaves me.

Since the end of March, I have watched my Mother go from a strong independent woman to one who needs help with simple tasks like fixing her hair, answering the telephone, and applying her makeup. Another earthquake! At times I cannot believe that she is no longer the same woman who sewed beautiful handmade clothing for my sister and me, taught us to ride a bicycle, and attended every dance recital and band competition we had. I feel like it must be a very bad dream, and surely I will wake up to find everything okay. But no, this is not a dream.

Yet again, I find my faith being tested by another earthquake. God promised to take care of us to our old age and gray hairs. Because of my faith journey these past 12 years, I am able to believe that what God promises, God accomplishes. I know He will do what is best for Mother. Yet, sometimes I weep over the loss. When I do, I sense the comforting arms of Jesus around me, reminding me that He is there, and He knows my pain and Mother’s need.

All around me friends and acquaintances are experiencing earthquakes similar to my own. Parents are growing older, experiencing dementia and other illnesses. Nursing homes, assisted living, incontinence, mountains of medication all vie for our attention. We are all in this together. Often the whole thing seems overwhelming and depressing. It is in those moments that Jesus sends my favorite worship song or a Scripture to comfort me. He reminds me that when we pass through the waters or the fire, they will not consume us. He reminds me that we should not fear for He is with us.

How do people go through difficult times without Jesus?

Yes, my heart hurts.

Yes, I have questions.

Yes, my faith can tremble.

BUT, my Jesus will never leave me nor forsake me. He will strengthen me, He will uphold me with His right hand. There is nothing that can ever separate me from the love of Christ. Nothing. In the good times, and in the bad, Jesus is there giving me comfort, wisdom, and help.
