As you know, Greg and I vacationed at the beach last week. While we are not huge beach folk, there is a certain magic and mystery that envelopes the sand and waves. The ocean, much like the flicker of fire, draws me to a place of pondering.
As I sat on our balcony and watched the waves flow in, I was reminded of the words of God to Job in Job 38:8 and 12 (NLT)
“Who defined the boundaries of the sea?
I said, ‘Thus far and no farther will you come. Here your proud waves must stop!”
I have no control over the ocean. I could stand on the shoreline and shout to the ocean, “Flood the shoreline,” and the ocean would pay no attention to me whatsoever. It would keep on ebbing and flowing just as it has for thousands of years. But, if God, the One who created the oceans, were to even whisper, “Flood the shoreline,” man and animal would be destroyed in a matter of seconds. Why? Because He is God. He is the one who commands the wind and the waves. (Luke 8: 24)
The gangly pelican flies over the ocean, scouting for breakfast beneath the waves. She spots a fish, rolls, and nosedives (and she has a significant nose to lead the way) into the water. Up she comes, victorious in the hunt. God created her with the exact abilities and tools she requires to survive. Ah, the beauty of creation.
The delicate, quirky trails left by the Fiddler crabs as they dance along the sand at night, seeking a place to burrow, offers evidence of the creativity of the Creator. Who would have thought that something as odd-appearing as a crab could leave such beautiful little trails? Not me. I probably would have passed on creating the crabs, and focused more on the dolphins and starfish, had I been in charge of the sea creatures. God created everything perfectly.
As I watch the ocean waves roll in and out; as I see the pelicans hunting for food and evidence of the Fiddler crab’s dance across the sand, for the life of me, I don’t understand how anyone can believe it all happened because of a BANG, BIG OR OTHERWISE. Creation screams forth the necessity and creativity of a Creator. It is small wonder that after six days of creating, God looked at it all and exclaimed that it was very good. Thousands of years later, and even with the effects of sin weighing heavily upon the creation, creation still gives evidence that what God made was good. Yes, it was and remains VERY GOOD.
