Have you ever had a Joshua moment?

A Joshua moment is a moment when God asks you to do something that you are certain you cannot do. Not only are you certain you cannot do it, you feel pretty sure that God dialed the wrong number when He was looking for someone to do this ‘something’.

I have some Joshua moments in my walk with Jesus, and I’m sure you have as well. In fact, you may be standing smack in the middle of one, wondering what in the world was God thinking when He called you to a specific task. That is exactly how I felt when I began writing the Hebrews Bible study.

Me? Write Hebrews? Uh, no, Lord, that is a very intense, highly theological book of Scripture that even great theologians don’t fully understand or agree on. Surely, you don’t mean that I am supposed to write a Bible study from the book of Hebrews? That is more of a Beth Moore- or Priscilla Shirer-sized task.

“Yes, you Leah. I don’t make mistakes. You are the one I have chosen to write this study.”

What Joshua moment are you experiencing? Would you like some encouragement for your journey? It is the same encouragement the Lord offered to me from Joshua 1. Please pay special attention to the highlighted words and phrases.

1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide: 2 “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them–to the Israelites. 3 I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. 4 Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates–all the Hittite country–to the Great Sea on the west. 5 No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. 6 “Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.

May I leave you with a few takeaways from this marvelous passage of Scripture?

  • God’s callings are not accidental
  • The victory is already assured
  • God never calls without equipping
  • God never calls and then abandons
  • Be strong in God’s strength
  • Be courageous because God is directing your paths and knows the outcome
  • Be obedient to God’s directions so you will be successful in what He called you to do

MEDITATION MOMENT: What Joshua moment is staring you in the face? Which of these takeaways speaks most deeply to your heart?
