Our topic today at The Loft is SOCIAL MEDIA. I will be honest with you….my thoughts on social media lean a lot toward the negative. Oh sure, it can, and is used for a lot of good, but it also can have serious, negative impact on people and relationships. The video that I want to share with you today speaks to that negative impact.
Before we watch the video, however, I want to address one additional negative impact of social media, and that is how it has affected our attention spans. My attention span. When I began doing in-depth Bible study in the early 2000’s, I would sit for up to an hour studying Scripture, thinking little of the time that was passing. I was engrossed and engaged.
Over the course of the years, as social media became more prevalent in my life, specifically Facebook and blogging, it seems I have slipped into the sound-bite mentality. Today we get our information in sound-bites. A 140 character Tweet, a post on Facebook, an Instagram or Pinterest picture. Glance and go.
As I sit some days to spend time in God’s Word I find that I must fight against that ‘glance and go’ mentality. I check to see how much longer it will take to finish that day of study. My attention wanders after a page of homework, and I am ready to move on to the next thing on my schedule.
Sisters, this cannot be. I cannot fall into this pattern, and neither can you. We must be diligent students of the Word, spending focused time there, without falling victim to the glance-and-go mentality.
I’m eager to hear whether you have noticed this in your own life, if you are active on social media.
Ok, now for the video that I wanted to share with you. It is from The Skit Guys and offers a pointed message on how social media can have a negative impact on our lives.
We are a topic driven link-up, which means that we link posts that pertain to the topic of the week. Posts that are not on topic will be deleted.
We will offer a month’s worth of topics each week so you can plan and prepare for a post that helps you enter into the conversation. Here are the topics for the next month:
August 17 ~ Social Media
August 24 ~ Books
August 31 ~ Pot Luck
September 7 ~ Labor/Work
Just a reminder that the link-up goes live on Wednesday morning at 5am and will stay live until the following Monday at 5pm. If you link up at The Loft, please do not link-and-run. We want to create conversation and community, therefore, we ask that if you linkup one post, please visit two others. There are some beautiful people who link-up each week, and visiting their posts is the best way to get to know them.
Now, it is time to get to today’s link-up. Our prompt today is SOCIAL MEDIA. You will find the linky at the bottom of my post. Enjoy the fellowship at The Loft.
