I love to learn! As a speaker and writer, I especially love to learn new words, however, I have found that I have to be intentional about doing so. Words are the way we communicate and learning new words enables us to better communicate with those around us. Heaven knows, I could stand to communicate better and more clearly!! If you are like me, you have found yourself either searching for a word in the middle of a conversation or using the incorrect word in a sentence. I remember as a child I never could quite get the hang of whether I was ‘itching’ something or ‘scratching’ it.
I would love to hear from you about whether this is a word you use regularly or not. I also welcome you to submit words that you might want to see highlighted on New Word Wednesday.
Today’s New Word is ASSIMILATE.
Assimilate: /uh–sim–uh-leyt/ – to make similar; to take in and utilize as nourishment; absorb into the system; to take into the mind and thoroughly comprehend; to alter by assimilation; to absorb into the culture or mores of a population or group.
Usage: We can help new Christians assimilate into our church by inviting them to take part in various activities such as Bible studies, music programs, and meals around our tables. This makes them feel welcome and part of our church family.
