Remember When???

My mother has always been quite adept at hanging onto things from mine and my sister’s childhood. She kept some of the clothes my sister and I wore. She also kept some of our toys. Inevitably, some of these items ended up in shadow boxes and were presented to us in our young adult years. We so treasure them!! At one point, she even had all of our baby teeth. Yikes, I was always a bit wary of opening a box and finding my baby teeth strung into a necklace or bracelet!!!

Over the course of the next few weeks, I am going to take a stroll through my collection of childhood keepsakes. This journey may be of no interest to anyone but me, but I’ll try to make spiritual application as I go so that it is not a complete waste of your time. Join me if you will. I bet you will find some things in my collection that brings back a few memories of your own.

In one of my guest bedroom closets, I keep this:

Anyone else have a set of these? Crayola Crayons – the 72 count box complete with sharpener and drawing book. The box says, “72 different colors INCLUDING 8 Fluorescent crayons”. My box is very old—probably closer to 40 years old than 30 years. (Sorry these pics are off center….just not having a good picture posting day.) When I opened it, this is what I saw.

Memories flooded back. I loved to color!!

I have NOT an artistic mitochondria in my body, but I could sure stay in the lines when I colored. Then I looked at the notes my Mom had put in the box….had completely forgotten about the notes. Here is the first one.

I haven’t checked but I may have some collector’s pieces here—a little rough around the edges, but I’ve got them, nonetheless. Here is the next note that she wrote:

These are the colors that have been retired and are no more. Maize, Raw Umber, Lemon Yellow, Blue Gray, Violet Blue, Green Blue, Orange Red, and Orange Yellow. It seems that I have them in my little collection!! Not very creative names, are they? I think the Crayola people need a few of the OPI Nail Polish folks working for them!!!

The final note said:

Now, why in the world would they re-name Indian Red? Did it offend someone? Did some research on the Crayola website and here is what I found about Indian Red: ***Indian Red is renamed Chestnut in 1999 in response to educators who felt some children wrongly perceived the crayon color was intended to represent the skin color of Native Americans. The name originated from a reddish-brown pigment found near India commonly used in fine artist oil paint.

Do you know what this reminds me of?

Revelation 7:9 (NIV)

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude
that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands.

The multi-colored church of Jesus Christ around the throne worshipping Him. We will be a complete church, just like my complete box of crayons. We will be a made up of those who have gone on and those who have been caught up. We will also be renamed by the One who gave His life for us….new names known only to Him.

The multi-colored church of Jesus Christ. Here and now. There and then. How exciting!
